After a year of internal turmoil, I understand why some people are hesitant to spend money on Sonos products. However, interim CEO Tom Conrad has demonstrated a commitment to getting the company back on track and revitalizing Sonos as the leading whole-home audio brand. The previously contentious mobile app is in a much better state today, although some users still encounter bugs and occasional speaker disconnections. While not perfect, the situation is improving, and I viewed Sonos’ decision to cancel its video player as a positive sign of renewed focus. I have no plans to sell my Sonos equipment. The company’s whole-home platform offers conveniences that competitors struggle to match. I primarily stream from Apple Music, Spotify, or YouTube Music, but can easily pipe audio from my Sonos soundbar to another room while watching sports on TV. Many of Sonos’ recent speakers also allow you to stream Bluetooth audio across your entire system.
I have extensively covered Sonos for several years at The Verge, reporting on company news, reviewing numerous products, and highlighting the app issues that led to the departure of former CEO Patrick Spence. Audio and home theater are key areas of my product review focus, giving me a strong understanding of what makes a speaker or soundbar truly great. While I wouldn’t fault anyone for waiting to see how Sonos and its app evolve, potential price increases due to tariffs should be considered. Despite the software misstep, Sonos makes excellent hardware, so now might be a good time to buy.
Here’s a look at some standout Sonos products:
How I test Sonos speakers: I spend considerable time testing Sonos speakers and soundbars in real-world environments. This includes listening to portable speakers both indoors and outdoors, conducting movie marathons to evaluate soundbar capabilities, and thoroughly assessing the audio performance of speakers like the Five. I also test water-resistant devices by bringing them to lakes or pools to ensure they can withstand splashes and everyday elements.
The right speaker for the right scenario: Sonos offers a wide range of speakers, including desk speakers, portable Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, subwoofers, and the Ikea Symfonisk line designed to blend into home decor. The best choice depends on your needs.
Good sound quality: While some audiophiles may be skeptical, Sonos hardware consistently delivers clear, pleasant audio that most people will enjoy.
Adaptability: The Sonos ecosystem is incredibly versatile. You can play TV audio in other rooms, connect a Bluetooth-enabled turntable, or enjoy line-in audio at higher fidelity. The Sonos controller app supports virtually every music streaming service available.
Lengthy software support: Few tech companies provide software updates and new features for their products as long as Sonos. Speakers introduced a decade ago are still compatible with the latest S2 platform and receive firmware updates.
